How your details are looked after

Digital Citizens of India is a people’s collective, not a company. This page explains, in plain language, how details shared with the collective and with this website are handled, and what you can do if you have a question about it.

Who this page is for

This page covers anyone who visits this website, fills the joining form, submits a story, or writes to the collective. If you are simply reading a playbook or the charter, this website does not ask you for anything at all.

When you join the collective

The joining form asks for your full name as on your voter ID, state and district, email, phone, languages, skills and interests, and a copy of your voter ID. A trained volunteer verifies these details. If the volunteer is not satisfied for any reason, the joining simply does not go ahead, and nothing is said about the person or their ID.

That is all the voter ID is used for: to confirm that a Digital Citizen is a real person and an Indian citizen, and that each person joins only once. Details shared at joining are kept safely, used only for running the collective, and never sold or shared. You can ask to see, correct or remove your details at any time.

How you give consent

Filling the joining form, and ticking its consent box, is how you agree to the verification step and to this page. Writing to us, or sending a story for the website, is taken as your consent to that particular use of what you send. You may withdraw consent at any time by leaving the collective, as described below, though this does not undo anything already done with your details up to that point.

How long details are kept

Details are kept for as long as you are part of the collective. If you leave, with a short note by email, your entry is removed within thirty days.

Who looks after your details, and who we share them with

Details are looked after by named Digital Citizens who take on this responsibility for the whole collective. They are shared no further than needed to run the collective, and never sold, rented or passed on for advertising. The only time details leave the register is where the law requires it, such as a lawful request from a government or law enforcement authority.

Keeping details secure

The register is kept in one place, with access limited to the named caretakers who look after it, and reasonable care is taken to keep it secure. No system is perfect, and the section below explains what happens if something still goes wrong.

This website

This website does not run advertising or tracking cookies to build a profile of visitors. It uses Cloudflare to help keep the website fast, reliable and secure from attacks; as part of that, Cloudflare looks at some technical details of visits, such as IP addresses, under its own privacy notice. Any cookie this website itself sets is a technical one, needed for it to work correctly, such as remembering that you have opened a section of a page. The joining form is provided through Tally, an outside form tool, and what you type into that form is handled under Tally’s own privacy notice, in addition to this one.

Links to other websites

Some pages on this website, such as the playbooks, link out to government portals and other outside websites. Once you follow such a link, that website’s own privacy notice applies, not this one.

If something goes wrong

If details are ever exposed by mistake, the citizens affected will be told within seventy two hours, along with the authority the law names for such matters.

If you are under eighteen

Digital Citizens of India is for citizens eighteen years and above, and joining is only open to adults. This website’s public pages, such as the playbooks, are written to be useful to anyone, including a younger reader looking for guidance with a parent or elder. We do not knowingly collect joining details from anyone under eighteen.

Your rights

You can ask, at any time, to see what is kept about you, to correct it, or to have it removed. Write to us at complaints @ digitalcitizens .in, and we try our best to reply within seven days.

Changes to this policy

This page may be updated as the collective grows. The latest version will always be here, and the date it last changed is at the bottom of this page. This page, together with our Terms and Conditions and our charter, covers our full understanding with you about your details. Nothing here reduces any right you have under Indian law.
